This year’s Frozen Apple was truly a special event. We had the opportunity to play on NHL ice at the UBS Arena after a New York Islanders home game against the San Jose Sharks. It was a great Islander game as they beat the Sharks, and we saw one of the Islander greats, Brett Sutter, inducted into the Islander Hall of Fame!
After the Islanders left the ice and most of the fans left the arena, we took the ice and did our best to keep those hockey fans in attendance as excited as they were during the Islanders game. It was a great game between the Marys and the Alices. The Sedgwick Alices jumped to a quick 3-0 lead, but the Mound Cotton Marys fought back and made it a game. Ultimately, the Sedgwick Alices defended their title with a 7-3 win (with an Empty Net Goal to seal the victory). Shockingly, the Islanders did not rush down and offer any of our players a contract on the spot, but we all played hard and gave it a good effort.
We had lots of returning players and a bunch of new faces this year. That’s what keeps this event fun and fresh. The grizzled veteran players are passing our history on to the new young blood!
Once again, our charity was Ice Hockey In Harlem. This year, we helped raise $6,793.97. This money is truly appreciated and is always put to good use. It helps defray the cost for children in the Harlem area of New York to play hockey, and have other life experiences that the hockey community can provide.
